I know I promised we’d get specific, but first we have to start with the big picture. We need an initial shape in which to put all our discoveries about ourselves. The first and foundational layer of my identity is that I am a child of God. A daughter of the one true king.
1 John 3:1 says, “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we are called children of God. And that is what we are!”
One of my daily prayers is that I would fully know this in both my head and heart. Belonging is one of the greatest needs of the human race. We all long with our whole spirit to belong. This longing was placed in us by God because we find our belonging in Him. He longs for us to know how deeply He loves us. It’s incomprehensible, to deep for us to fathom.
Of course, we look for belonging in all the wrong places. We look to others, to our job, to our families, to the world and it’s confused messages for our belonging. Oh, that we would know intimately that our belonging can only be found in our creator. And contrary to what many religious people will tell you, one of the best ways to know God is through knowing ourselves. He created us, he knows us more intimately than we ever will and certainly more than any other person. It’s not self-serving to discover his creation in us…by knowing ourselves we can know Him.
Of course, part of knowing who we are is looking in scripture to see what he says about us. I created this artwork to showcase many verses that talk specifically about our identity. It’s a shared legacy and it’s beautiful.
